Employment
There is a range of employment opportunities on the island. The ferry provides 6 jobs, the school employs 2 teachers and 3 other staff, all except one teacher from the island.
The District Nurse service employs two local people and others from Skye on a rota. Other employment, mainly of a part-time nature, is available at the shop and post office, the hotel and in the provision of care services.
Raasay Outdoor Centre provides full-time employment for its 3 directors and 2 others. (Additional seasonal (summer) jobs created by the company are mainly, though not exclusively, filled by those from off the island, many from outwith Scotland).
For those whose working hours can fit in with the ferry timetable, it is possible to work on Skye. Those doing so include teachers, local government staff, nurses and catering staff. Others are employed further afield, for example on other Calmac ferries.
A substantial number of those of working age are self-employed, mainly in building, crofting and agriculture.
