Denomination

The Raasay Free Church is one of the congregations of the Free Church of Scotland. The denomination not only has congregations in Scotland but also throughout the world.The church has an extensive mission in Lima, Peru and other outreach programs.

The denomination runs the Free Church College, to date it has prepared most of the candidates for the Free Church ministry and offers courses for those interested in theology and doctrine. Contained in the Free Church College, on The Mound in Edinburgh, is perhaps the largest of the Free Church Bookshops. To visit the bookshop online>>

Raasay Congregation of the Raasay Free Church has been in continuous use for well over 100 years. Raasay residents still worship at the Church despite the fact that the congregation currently do not have a permanent 'Supply'.

Services: 12.00 noon and 5.00pm
Midweek Meetings: Prayer Meeting, Wednesday 7.00pm, as intimated or during resident supply.

The Sabbath Day services are conducted in English with the reading and exposition of scripture. The format of the worship includes and the singing of Metrical Psalms lead by a Presenter. The majority of the congregation understand and speak Gaelic, the Presenter has the ability to sing the Psalms using a method known as 'Giving out the Line'. At present this method of singing the Psalms is generally only used on special occations but in the past it was common practice. Usually, the duration of the whole service is approximately one hour.

Free Church Services

 

During the summer months, the Raasay Free Church benefits from students who attend the Free Church College, offering them an opportunity to preach in an island setting. The congregation has Communion annually and this takes place on the 3rd Sabbath in June.

"Learn Metrical Psalms used in the Free Church" is an online resource for those interested in learning Psalm tunes often used in Free Church congregations. The melody is played simultaneously with a visual of the tune. The visual aspect also allows the user to increase the tempo, pitch and volume. Currently there are about 20 tunes in the database. To access these files you will need to install the "Scorch" plug-in from Sibelius.com
