Raasay: An Introduction to its Archaeological Monuments: By Martin Wildgoose ©

Medieval Centuries
In the Medieval Centuries following the Scandinavian incursions little is known of the islands history and it is not until the time of the MacLeods of Raasay (400 years ago) that events again become clear. The history of this period is extensive and very complicated, with local authors disagreeing about minor details, and is best approached through the writings of Richard Sharpe, Norma MacLeod and Rebecca MacKay, all having produced detailed histories of Raasay.
The Medieval period however has left us two stunning monuments, the 13th century chapel dedicated to St. Moluag, close by Raasay House and the now ruinous castle at Brochel in the north of the island. Both are worth a visit.
