Winnie Ireland - The Alexander Technique
Winnie Ireland MSTAT - Alexander Technique ![]()
Human beings are designed to function well in an open and freely poised way, like young children.

Over time, dealing with life, tensions build up, often unnoticed, and interfere with natural, well coordinated balance and support. This can lead to wear and tear, stiffness, pain and other health problems.
In an Alexander Technique lesson the teacher works with words and gentle touch to help you to reduce tension and allow natural poise to return. You become more aware of the ways in which you do everyday things, like standing, walking and sitting, and find ways to simplify and free up these movements, making them easier and more enjoyable. The technique can then be applied to any activity.
It takes time to learn a new skill, but come for a lesson, try it out and see if you would like to learn more. Wear comfortable clothes that you can move about in.
I have been interested in the technique for several years. I like that it is a practical and simple (though not always easy!) way to make life better for myself and others. I have completed a three year training and have been teaching since 2002.
MSTAT stands for member of the Society of Teachers of the Alexander Technique which sets standards for teachers and regulates training courses.
