PRESS RELEASE

FUNDING  FOR  a New Playpark for RAASAY

Parents and children on Raasay are celebrating the award of a grant of £76,000 from the Community Environmental Renewal Scheme.  The grant allows the community to build a new childrens’ playpark on a site beside the existing playing field.

Anne Speak spokesperson for the playpark working group said ' The community is overjoyed at the news of the grant. It will enable us to create asafe, fun, outdoor play space forthefiftyor so childrenwho live onRaasay and for the many others who visit regularly. The new playpark will more than replace the current dilapidated swings and slide which are situated at the edge of the football pitch. This causes no end of trouble with young children being hit by footballs.

By creating a separate playpark we can greatly improve the play facilities available and it may also be possible to widen the football pitch at some time in the future.

The project has been taken forward by a partnership of the Raasay Community Council and the Raasay Community Association.  Local fundraising by the community raised nearly £3000 for the project.

Thesite for the new playpark was kindlyreleased by Callum Gillies earlier in the year and purchased from the Scottish Executive with a grant from the Rural Development Small Awards Fund. Roland Stiven chair of the Raasay Community Association said ‘the project has really benefited from the strong support of the community and the generous response from everyone we have approached.’
